Every two seconds, someone in America needs a blood transfusion -- and every blood donation can save as many as three lives.

The Rotary Club of Forked River will be hosting its 10th Annual Blood Drive between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Saturday at the Community Hall on the corner of Route 9 and Lacey Road.

Dr. Thomas McGillick said donating only takes about one hour, but can make such a difference.

Anyone age 17 or older, weighing 110 pounds, and in good health can make a donation. Those younger than age 18 do need to be accompanied by a parent or guardian, said McGillick.

At this time of the year blood donations are really low, but they are really urgently needed, said McGillick.

As winter approaches there are more harsh weather conditions like ice and snow that cause more car accidents. McGillick said that, on average, every car accident that occurs requires 10 pints of blood.

McGillick said that not enough people donate, about one out of 10, because they fear needles or claim to not have enough time. Donations are the only way blood can be donated, said McGillick.

"It can't be manufactured and there is somebody that needs it," he said.

The Rotary Club is a service organization that completes many service projects and helps many organizations.

"It is after the blood drive that I feel I did something for the community at large though," said McGillick.

Appointments are not necessary, but are requested to eliminate long waits. To schedule an appointment, call (609) 971-7722.
