LACEY -- Every minute of every day someone needs blood and that need is increasing, according to the American Red Cross.

The Forked River Rotary Club will sponsor the 10th annual blood drive from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Dec. 3 at the Community Hall on the corner of Route 9 and Lacey Road.

Last year's drive brought in 44 pints of blood and about 50 or so people.

"One pint can save as many as three people," said Dr. Tom McGillick, a local doctor in charge of the organizing ane executing efforts.

McGillick expects around 60 participants this year and reported that the morning schedule is already fast to fill.

Residents are encouraged to call in and sign up ahead of time so that the Red Cross knows how many nurses to send.

The process takes about an hour per individual, McGillick explained. Participants will arrive, register, go through their medical history with a nurse, donate for 15 to 20 minutes and then sip on juice and munch on cookies before leaving.

Donors must be at least 17 years old, at least 110 pounds and in reasonably good health.

"They all leaving saying they feel like a hero, and they should," McGillick said. "There is no replacement for this blood."
